The Sturgis Pages

My favorite place on earth is the  Black Hills of South Dakota. A journalist traveling with Custer wrote of the Black Hills:

"The lover of nature could here find his soul's delight; the invalid regain his health; the old, be rejuvinated; the weary find sweet repose and invigoration; and all who could come and spend the heated season here would find it the most pleasantest summer home in America."

Every year we pack up the motorcycles and ride our way out to South Dakota for the Sturgis Motorcycle Classic. Gary, Kellie, Nancy and Jeff. We have been best of friends for over 16 years and the fun never stops! We have ridden thousands of miles together.

The commercialism has overtaken Sturgis and it has become very expensive to go . Hotels are over priced. Merchants are charged way too much to set up shop and they pass that expense on to us. But, we go to enjoy the beautiful hills. I was stationed there at the 44th Strategic Missile Wing and the 28the Bomb Wing of Ellsworth AFB. We bought our first home in Rapid City. It was a great assignment and we fell in love with the hills then. In the 25 years we have been going to the hills, we still find new and exciting things for us there.  We usually hit Sturgis one day out of the week. The rest of the time we are taking in all the sites. Riding the Harleys through the hills is the only way to go! Check out the Sturgis 2001 pics!

Here is proud Nancy on her 1994 Dyna Glide. This is as it was when she bought it. The bike is totally custom now with radical paint

This is Nancy's custom  94 Dyna- Glide as it looks today. We took off the bags, added forward controls and a Corbin seat.

This is Kellie's bike. This prize winning Sportster has a totally custom paint job. Click on the image of the motorcycle and take a glimpse at who rides this pretty bike.

2001 Springer
Jeff's Bike. This is a 2001 Heritage Softail Springer. The bike was ordered in April 2000 and by December he was riding it home in the snow.
Pictured below are my 1975 FL and my 91 FLHTC. The 75 was bought in 1990 and is the bike that I rode out to the 50th Anniversary of Sturgis. I had my share of breakdowns with it, but somehow we made it out. I did not make it back on the bike though. Somewhere in the middle of nowhere South Dakota, the chain tensioner shoe had worn so much that the Teflon shavings had clogged my oil return line. It did not take long for the oil supply to be completely depleted. We wound up throwing the bike in the back of a U-Haul and carting it back home.

The 91 is my first new Harley.  I had this bike for 7 years as a plain black bike. It now has custom paint and all kinds of chrome. This bike has been to countless Sturgis events, Hog Rallies and Daytona. We towed this one to Sturgis 2000
